MARS consortium partner the Manufacturing Technology Lab (MTL) from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) attended the international conference FAIM (Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing) that took place from June 23-26, 2024 in Taichung, Taiwan.

This conference have been hosted across Europe, America and Asia, since 1991 and is a globally recognized platform facilitating the exchange of cutting-edge research, theories, and practices in the field of automation and manufacturing.

Main topics at FAIM

This year’s theme was, Manufacturing Innovation and Preparedness for the Changing World Order: Smart Manufacturing Enabled by Cyber-Physical Systems and Distributed & Secured Global Supply Chains.

Conference paper presented by NTUA

NTUA MTL presented a paper titled “On enhancing legacy CNC Machine Tools for Process Monitoring and Cloud Integration in Industry 4.0” and discussing its involvement within the MARS project.

In the Industry4.0 paradigm, the development of manufacturing equipment digital twins relies on the availability of large amounts of data, which can be easily collected in the case of modern Computerized Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools due to their advanced communication capabilities and interfaces. However, this becomes a non-trivial problem when dealing with CNC machine tools that are based on older technologies, which is a common occurrence in SME companies. The presented paper addresses the need to modernize these legacy CNC machine tools so that they can be integrated with process monitoring and cloud-based manufacturing systems.
